Valbuena 5° is made by the legendary Vega Sicilia, the winery most well-known for three things: (1) It is Spain’s equivalent of a first growth, (2) Its wine was originally not for sale and shared only among Spain’s aristocrats, (3) It once famously told the King of Spain, when he rang to order some wine, that he had to wait his turn – “just like everybody else”. Oh yes, and in the 80s, Julio Iglesias put in a bid to buy the estate, days after it was sold to the Alvarez family. OK, so not three, but four things. Between the King of Spain and Julio, obviously, I had to taste this wine. Not the super exclusive first wine Unico, but Valbuena 5°, its second. But hey, far be it from me to be ungrateful. Some day, the Unico will come.
